Natalie Tong's acting choices due to late-mother

Despite the criticisms received by the TVB drama, "Bullet Brain", actress Natalie Tong's acting was one of the few that was considered the drama's saving grace.

Popular Asians website reported that the actress, who is known for picking good girl roles, surprised fans with her portrayal of Mui Mui in "Bullet Brain", a dark character with schizophrenic tendencies.

"Playing Miu Miu was a big challenge for me," the actress stated. "To prepare for the role, I locked myself in a bathroom for three hours to get into her mindset. I have always played safe characters and for once, I was given a role that is so unlike me. Initially, I had no idea how to play her, so I spent a lot of time talking with former mental patients and recorded their stories."

Meanwhile, the actress also shared that it was her mother's passing that changed her perception about life and her acting path.

The actress, who has already been in the business for 10 years, stated, "I never really thought about my future. I did not make any effort to work hard. I only wanted to try new experiences at the time."

Back in 2009 when Natalie's mother passed away from a heart attack, Natalie took it upon herself to care for her father and elder brother, turning her from a pampered daughter into a matured adult overnight.

"I used to be fussy about people and surroundings. Now, my thinking is simple and I will not expect others to be with me wholeheartedly," the actress concluded.

Natalie Tong Locks Herself in Bathroom 180 minutes: "I Wanted to Die"

Natalie Tong had always had the gentle and refined image, but this time she has a breakthrough in TVB series Bullet Brain. She plays Detective Columbo's (Wayne Lai) first love, "Mui Mui". Last week on the series, Natalie appeared like a female ghost dressed in red and coupled with her Schizophrenic behaviors, the audience felt the chills, but many have praised the major improvements in her acting.

Natalie revealed in order to get into character she locked herself up for 180 minutes: "Mui Mui was trapped in a dungeon for 3 years, but I personally never had that kind of experience in real life. I tried locking myself up in the bathroom. After the first half hour, I already felt like I wanted to die. I didn't know was going on in the outside world, I had a lot to think about while in the bathroom. This role has such a miserable background."

"Mui Mui" is 41 years old, but Natalie is only 31 in real life, so in order to convince the audience, she relied on the costumes and 'sacrificed' a little. She laughed: "I used glue to create a lot of wrinkles. My costume really helped a lot, allowing me to get more into character. (Glue really damages the skin though?) Indeed, I got a few more wrinkles after. It took me two hours to do the makeup and then I had endured through a whole day of filming. The crew tried their best to let me slack one day, just film two scenes and then I could go rest." Asked if she has the courage to portray an older role again? Natalie sighed and then laughed: "I really don't know. I dare not to think about it."

Natalie Tong Sings Off-Key with Kenneth Ma Around Her; Kenneth Still Gives a "Like"

The 'best deal' Kenneth Ma attends his first event with Natalie Tong as a couple team. They attended electronic store DSC's 15th anniversary event and this is Kenneth's third year as the company's spokesperson. When he appeared, the MC Kitty Yuen grabbed his hand and joked she wanted rumors with him.

Natalie Tong later appeared in a yellow spring low-cut dress. It is rare to see Natalie dress in low-cut outfits. When she performed the song To the Men I Loved, the event organizer made a last minute arrangement for Kenneth to accompany her on stage and dance in the background. Natalie saw Kenneth looking at her with profound feelings, her heart started racing and she couldn't even remember the lyrics to the song. The music had to start again from the beginning. During Natalie's performance, Kenneth circled her, then lightly patted her on the shoulder and took initiative to hold her hand in attempt to help her calm down. However, Natalie felt even more nervous and practically went off-key throughout the entire song. Later during the raffle drawing, the two were often whispering in each other's ears.

After the event, Natalie explained the event organizers played the wrong music, but she admitted she got nervous when Kenneth stared at her. She expressed this is her first time singing in front of an opposite sex. Not even her rumored boyfriend Amigo Chui got that opportunity.

Kenneth was asked how he would score Natalie's singing skills? He said: "High score! I would definitely say her singing is good!" Kenneth admitted he is very pleased with the 'couple team' price. He said: "I don't mind having many rumors, just as long as the reports aren't too over. Advertisers like to hire me and my current rumored girlfriend to do shows together." Natalie immediately squealed: "Such a flirt!" Kenneth explained: "Just trying to make more money!" When asked whether he'll give appliances or electronics when pursuing girls? He laughed: "Nope! Girls today like diamonds! But, lately Natalie's house is going through renovation, this could help." Natalie blurted out, asking him to accompany her to buy electronics and hoped she could be the spokesperson with him.

Kenneth Ma Blurts Out Natalie Tong & Amigo Chui's Relationship

Lately it has been rumored because Kenneth Ma got in between Natalie Tong and Amigo Chui's relationship, which angered Amigo and madly scolded Kenneth. Last night, Kenneth and Natalie were recording for a TVB show. Natalie expressed she asked Amigo about it: "He said he didn't yell at anybody. What really happened was his pimples came bursting out, but he he didn't burst at anyone. (He has enough trust in you, that your heart won't change?) I'm not in a relationship nor can I feel anyone pursuing me." Kenneth also denied the rumor: "Amigo and I are friends. I don't believe he yelled at me. Also, I don't go pursuing my friend's other half, that's awkward." It appears Kenneth just blurted out that Amigo and Natalie are a couple!

Natalie Tong Wants a Food Business like Jazz Lam, Partnering with "A Fistful of Stances' Cast

Jazz Lam opens his second ice cafe "Lung Fung Cafe" and invited good friends Natalie Tong, Toby Leung and Oscar Leung to celebrate with him. Since the store opening attracted a lot of people, the street was jammed and the police had to assist at the scene. Jazz exposed last November because of the rainy weather, he feared his business would go downhill, but fortunately it was still profitable. He said: "My employees work so hard, I will treat them well and won't be like other companies, hold off on their pay checks!"

Natalie and Toby praised Jazz has a career and is a good man. When asked if she'll be like Jazz and start a business of her own too? She said: "Jazz is so good at doing business, I can partner up with him and start a food business. Then we'll get the A Fistful of Stances crew back. I'll be responsible for the taste test, Kevin Cheng will be at the register and Kenneth Ma will be responsible to get us more customers since he's so popular among the females!"

Moses Chan Introduces 'Big Brother' to Natalie Tong, but No Fate

Yesterday Natalie Tong attended a Christmas event, where she performed with the acrobatics team. Natalie expressed she's working hard earning money during the holiday and earned 6 figures. She hopes she can buy a home next year. When asked about her current love life? She expressed she has no pursuers yet, "Waiting for a courageous man. (Everyone thinks you're Amigo Chui's girlfriend?) This thought has left too deep of an impression, but I'm waiting for someone who does not care about rumors and has an understanding.

Natalie revealed Amigo didn't do anything for her on Christmas, not even a SMS, but Moses Chan acted as a matchmaker and introduced a 'big brother' to her. Moses praised the big brother was more handsome than he is, but unfortunately the two had no fate.

Also, earlier Stephen Chan threw a Dooms Day party, but Natalie did not attend. She expressed: "We keep in touch by SMS, but he didn't invite me to the party. (Stephen is still troubled by a lawsuit, did you comfort him?) Nope, I don't want to bother him. (It was rumored TVB didn't allow their artists to go to his party?) No such thing."

Natalie Tong: Jason Chan didn't dare to touch or kiss me

In TVB new series No Good Either Way, it's considered Natalie Tong and Jason Chan first collaboration as a couple. In terms of entry into the industry, Natalie is Jason's "senior sister" (see jeh), but in terms of age, Jason is Natalie's "elder brother". However, Jason smiled and said Natalie often gave him advice when they were filming, she's very attentive and knows how to look after people. When asked if she's his cup of tea? Jason laughed: "Pretty ok! (Did you two take it a step further?) No! We are friends, sometimes we go out for dinner, it's better with more friends, more to talk about! I really admire her, she's very into her work and is attentive."

Natalie Feels Jason's nervousness

Jason is full of praises for Natalie, but this See Jeh teases him, exposing that he's extremely shy for the kiss scenes. Natalie laughed: "I felt he was nervous. There was one scene about us already dating for a long time, so we hold hands and give goodbye kisses. I told him to give me a kiss, but he just kissed me on the forehead. I said no no, when we actually film, you have to kiss me on the lips! He was really shy, in some scenes where he has to sweetly please me, he didn't dare to touch me. I had to ask him back, can you just touch me? Makes me sound like a creep!"

Jason's like her first boyfriend

But, Natalie said Jason started out quiet, but he later turned talkative. She had to shout for him to stop, just like those overly active children. When asked if she likes 'cute big men'? She said Jason is like her first boyfriend, she said: "Actually his looks and personality are very similar. Although it's our first collaboration, I can easily find his strengths to like him. He's very attentive too, and knows how to look after others to make up for his deficiencies. He has a lot of potential. When we were filming, women 25 and up were just staring at him."

Natalie Tong bashes 'Master of Play' being too serious

Yesterday Natalie Tong, Louis Yuen, Jason Chan, Ruco Chan and the rest of the cast of TVB new series No Good Either Way took part in the promotional event. Natalie expressed a few days ago when she was shooting for Detective Columbo, she was running a fever and barely got through the action scene, she said: "I had a scene where I was constantly screaming and fighting. I got some bruises on my arms and legs and didn't expect after a few days, I would lose my voice too! Initially I was going to just go to work anyway despite being sick, but the director heard my hoarse voice, so he told me to go home to rest." Although Natalie's sick, she still insisted on wearing 5 inch heels to play the balance beam game. However, she had a slight 'career line' cleavage during the game due to her dress sliding down. She almost exposed herself.

Asked if she has confidence on her new series replacing House of Harmony and Vengeance? Natalie said: "I have confidence! We have 'housewife killer' Ruco Chan and fan-attracting Jason Chan in the series. Also, Master of Play is such a serious drama, [our series] No Good Either Way is very light-hearted. There's a balance!"

Yesterday morning TVB broadcast Euro 2012: Holland vs Denmark. Before the game started, TVB host Nat Chan and nowTV host Hacken Lee had a conversation over the air and TVB generously allowed the clip to broadcast on their channel. However, aside from Hacken, no other nowTV hosts spoke. That morning, Louis was also live at the scene, he expressed yesterday at the promotion: "This never happened before! It's pretty good that both TVB and nowTV can collaborate for the first time, it's a good start. News Media should work hand-in-hand to conduct a MTV awards ceremony, that would be more representative and credible."

For the new series, Louis sings the theme song with Ruco Chan and Q Bobo, he expressed the NG clips will be uploaded online to share with audience.

Natalie Tong - Story Behind the Youthful Face

Natalie Tong is already 31 years old, but behind the face that seems as if it will look youthful forever is Natalie's emotional development. It is also because of Natalie's overly youthful appearance that she 'hits a wall' everywhere.

Don't think this weak and slender girl grew up in a heartwarming home with lots of love from her parents and elder brother. In fact, her life is the opposite. The family she speaks of is a broken one, her father continuously works and lives in Mainland, her mother works hard making a living in Hong Kong and her parent's relationship had issues. Perhaps its because Natalie was born passive, that she didn't follow the bad examples. Since youth, Natalie's wishes weren't to be good in school or to marry into a wealthy family, she just wanted a complete and heartwarming family.

"I never had a plan. I'm not like some people who have plans to become a lawyer one day. When I was young, I just wanted a nice home. Not my own home, but my parents' home. Some people say Heaven is fair, taking away something in your life, but then giving you back another thing."

"My mom always said I was pretty and always told me to go participate in Miss HK. The more she told me to do it, the more I didn't want to. I'm not doing it, I'm not doing it! Actually she was very happy that I became a model because she felt she had a beautiful daughter, and with that I should do something that can make money. My mom used to look very pretty as well, not sure if this was my dream or was it her dream. Kinda like she pushed the dream to me."

I believe, the current Natalie Tong, she can confidently tell her mother that she has become an artist that people will recognize when she's out on the streets, even if Mrs. Tong (Natalie's mother) is already in a far away place.

When Natalie won the Most Improved Actress award at the [2010 TVB Anniversary Awards], she said whatever she used to do, it was just a 'three minute passion', but now she truly likes to act and will start working hard to plan for the future.

"In the past, I felt I had the modern look. Later, they suggested that I shoot more costume dramas. The ancient costumes had helped me a lot because when we are all away from reality, we may see things differently."

Currently, Natalie just started shooting Lee Tim Shing's new series Detective Columbo, and is heavily used by the producer once again. This time, no only does she take on the lead actress role, but she will also develops a relationship with Wayne Lai's role.

Don't Have You, But Still Love You

It is not because Mother's Day was approaching that Natalie felt so emotional, but because she mentioned her late mother during the interview, and as a normal person would, tears filled up her eyes.

"I miss her every day. When I sleep at night, I would talk to her and pretend she can hear me! It's strange, when she is not here, I miss her severely and that's when I realize how much I really do love her. I only know that now though. In the past, we didn't have a good relationship. If she was still here, I may still be complaining about her.

In the past, my family had great financial difficulty. It was only my mother raising the family own her own. My brother was financially unstable, and my father, I haven't seen him for several years because he works long-term in Mainland. After I finished shooting Y2K at age 20, it was then I realized how bad our family was living. My mother had been trying to make a living all along, but that's how my mother is. She will not ask you to help her. When she can't handle it, she will go find something else to cover it and will never tell me about it."

Last Thursday (May 3rd), it was Natalie's birthday. Actually she should have celebrated, but it's not important anymore.

"Ever since my mom passed away, I never celebrated my birthday. Perhaps I'm different now, I want peace and quiet. On that day, I would get really emotional because I would think about my birthday is the day my mother gave birth to me and then many thoughts would run through my mind. So, I don't think its suitable for me to do any birthday celebrations. I don't want people to see me like I'm so happy, but then suddenly I get unhappy. So I want to spend the day by myself."

Grew Up Alone

Not only does Natalie celebrate her birthday alone, she spent most of her childhood alone as well.

"In the past, my thoughts were truly too childish. No one accompanied me at home, and it seems like they cared more about me when I'm not in school. It's because no one looked after me, no one would know if I went to school or not. Each day, I would sleep for over 10 hours and no one cared. When I was in elementary school, I went to the park to play alone after school and no one cared. I always thought to myself, why doesn't anyone care about me? When I was young, I wasn't sociable and didn't have many friends. I'm always eating alone, why isn't anyone playing with me? Why does everyone get to go on vacation and I don't?"

Natalie admitted her emotional development was much slower than the people her age. Perhaps it was after 4-5 years when she stepped into society and started working that she started to understand what type of person she really was.

"When I was growing up, there was no elders that taught me. I got everything from trips and falls. [For example], if I do something this way, people won't like it, then next time I won't do it that way. When I first entered TVB, I really didn't know how to treat my colleagues. Although I'm slow to get familiar, even if I don't know the person, I can still be very enthusiastic. Sometimes when I'm really happy, I would be like that and then get the wrong attitude. There are just too many, too many problems. This industry is very strange, sometimes I think of this person as a big sister, and I just don't know why I would really trust her and really want to tell her things, but in her standpoint, she only thinks of me as a regular friend. There were so many things I couldn't grasp, I couldn't feel it, and that would cause too many misunderstandings."

Close and Intimate Friend

With Amigo Chui, he is not simply just like a regular friend.

"We both have broken families. He really understands me and that may be because he thinks the same way I do. There was a period of time in the past that he really helped me a lot, but it is me, that didn't know how to handle the interpersonal relationship. Indeed, he has helped me a lot, but I really don't want to talk about him."

Kevin Cheng is a good senior in Natalie's heart.

"I collaborated with him in my very first TVB series. Up until now, we have been in over 7 series together. From being not familiar with him to....wah it seems like he's hard to get along with...to we can get along...he is considered a senior that watched me grow. He speaks very directly, "Hey you don't have a good reaction! Do it again!" Perhaps we are familiar with one another, so I had no hard feelings. I hope he speaks to me like that more often!

Actually, I really have to thank Marco (Law Wing Yin) too. He gave me a different role in every series. Before when I was in A Great Way to Care, my role was a woman who had a slight mental disorder and that got lots of reactions. The Confidant (Not released yet) is also one of his works too. The first time he asked me to be the Empress, which is such a serious role, but he still gave it to me. He has so much confidence in me, I really have to thank him because he just understands me too well. Also, Tim Gor (Lee Tim Shing), he created a very tragic role for me (A Fistful of Stances) and in another series, I play a dancer (currently shooting Detective Columbo). I have never ever imagined that I could be a dancer, but he gave the role to me. In the past, if you asked me to be a dancer, I would not do it. I would tell him I can't accept it, but now I would do it."

Prove a Miracle

Natalie's mother passed away in 2009, that is also the same year her elder brother defaulted due to losing in the stock market and the same year her father retired. She broke up with Amigo earlier that year as well. That year, Natalie was like a tragic character, similar to her role Ah Ngan in A Fistful of Stances.

"Before many people thought I just had a pretty face, a pretty girl that comes out with a smile. Because of this series, many people saw that I really act with my heart. When I was filming that series, perhaps I really experienced too much and in between, a lot of the plot was written for me, so I was able to naturally act it out."

This role won her the TVB "Most Improved Actress Award".

"It is the turning point in my life. I was really unhappy in the previous 2-3 years. I won the award because I accepted that series under such circumstances. In terms of my personal matters, I had a lot of unhappy events happening in life, and suddenly my career shed some light. I felt like I had some hope. I felt everyone felt differently about me and producers felt more confident to use me. I can do a lot of things with this career, and that is when I began to think of it positively."

"To a person that is in such withdrawal and lonely, being able to bring entertainment to everyone, that is like magic. All of my high school classmates, not a single one of them believed I could be an actress. Since I started being a model, they already believed that it was impossible for me to do this. Until I started being an actress and won the award, I received a lot of messages from my classmates, they said they never thought I could reach this level. I felt so touched."

In Natalie's childhood, she was alone and had no direction. When she was a teenager, she was again alone, tripping and falling as she grew up. As an adult, Natalie is still alone, but yet she's very proud of her achievements and has clear thoughts. In the last several years, Natalie has matured a lot.

A Strong Striving Heart

On cameras, Natalie's figure may seem like she gained 10 pounds, but she still looks slim. I thought she wasn't even 90 pounds.

"My mother is like that too. I am a 100 pounds! It's just I have small bones, and I don't get too fat. It's pretty ok because I'm healthy! In the past when I shoot series, I get dizzy. Raymond Wong is really afraid to be in the same series as me because I look like I already got a heatstroke even before we start shooting. That time, I really was a weakling. Three years ago, I collaborated with him for the first time, he bought me a can of Pocari Sweat and was always afraid I'll get dizzy. Last time when we were shooting Gloves Come Off, he did the same and brought me a Pocari Sweat. I told him I don't need it. I'm a lot better now. Actually I have been physically active all along, so it's OK."

In this world, there are big and fat people, people that are weaker, people that look like they are made of steel and people who are strong on the inside. Because of family inheritance, Natalie is definitely not going to become a fat girl, but rather an independent strong woman.

Natalie Tong gives it all she got on the bed scene with Raymond Wong

Natalie Tong had always gone down the filial girl path. In her new series Gloves Come Off, she plays Raymond Wong's girlfriend, the two will go through three phases from dating to marriage and finally to having a baby. She frankly expressed the majority of her roles in the past were young See Mui or younger sister roles. This time, her role goes from a young girl to a mature woman. She said: "This role is different from the previous young girl roles I had. Before I played a young girl because I really was a young girl then, but in the last two years I have matured a lot, and have reached to another level in my acting. When I was shooting this series, I had great emotional changes."

First time shooting a bed scene, Natalie gives it all she got and will show some skin with Raymond Wong. She said the bed scene this time is her limit as to how sexy she gets. Natalie expressed: "That was the last scene, and the director told me before that I won't have any clothes on. I thought he was just joking, but when we started shooting it, he wasn't joking. It was just the private parts of the body was covered with tape. This is my first time revealing so much." She expressed if she had to do a bikini catwalk, she would definitely turn it down, but since its necessary for the show, she can accept it.

When asked if she'll be an unmarried mother? Natalie said: "Actually in today's society, do we really have to have that marriage certificate in order to have a baby? To me, that piece of paper is not that important, but actually what's more important is if two people can really live the rest of their lives together."

Natalie said her current love life is completely empty, fate will naturally come when its time. She does, however, have several pursuers, but no one of them are suitable for her. She said: "When I was younger, I went to meet people with a blank mind, but now two people will have to chat a bit before finding out if the relationship will work out. I really want to find my Mr. Right, someone that is truly right for me. However, leave it to fate. I'm not rushed at all."

Nancy Wu: I'm Not A 'Sing Lui'

Raymond Wong, Kenny Wong, Nancy Wu, Natalie Tong, Selena Li and the rest of the cast to TVB new series Gloves Come Off attended the promotional event, where a boxing trainer taught the skills of Chinese boxing. Among the actresses Nancy, who plays a mute boxer in the series, performed the best. During the interview, she expressed she has interest in boxing, but won't consider participating in a competition.

Nancy was asked if the popular reality show Bride Wannabe has a celebrity version, will she be willing to participate? She immediately did 'tai chi' with her hands and shook her head: "I don't think I'm a 'sing lui', I won't listen to what the advisor recommends. I won't comment on the advisors, but the program is quite entertaining and is a good experience for the participants. However, I think girls shouldn't let the 'sing lui' label affect them. The most important is to live happily."

As for Natalie Tong, she usually appears pretty weak, but did pretty well on the boxing practice. She admits she was influenced by ex-boyfriend Amigo Chui and had often went boxing in the past. In regards to Amigo fined by the court because he didn't attend his driving improvement course and he has also decided not to drive again? Natalie expressed as a friend, she is willing to be the driver if they were to go out to eat. She said: "It's a good thing that he temporarily stops driving. It's not a problem if he starts driving again in the future."
