Stella Huang speaks on cake scandal

Stella Huang set up luxury cake chain Black As Chocolate after bowing out of the entertainment industry but was recently hit by claims that her cakes are kept up to 23 days before being put on the shelf. The ex-singer uploaded a video to clarify matters but has ended up fanning the flames of controversy.

In the video, she claimed that “a large proportion” of the cakes that are sold in her shop are made fresh every day and only “a small number” of them are sold after being defrosted, drawing the ire of netizens who have called her clarification “a word game”.

The 31-year-old is currently in confinement after the birth of her first child and her brother, who is the vice-president of her cake chain, invited members of the media to a tour of their central bakery. At the media visit, he was unable to answer questions on their products’ freshness and expiry dates.

He had previously stated that “chocolate cakes can be frozen for 15 days before being thawed and sold” but panicked when questioned if their cakes were made and sold on the same day by food safety inspectors. He replied, “This is a secret, I can’t reveal anything.”

Stella’s brother had originally agreed to sit down with reporters for interviews but quickly slipped away, causing much confusion at the venue. This incident has caused netizens to fume, calling him irresponsible.
