Ethan Ruan to receive monthly pay of S$428

Taiwanese actor Ethan Ruan's enlistment in January has sparked a number of controversies since his plans to enter military service were made public.

The actor was first accused of receiving special treatment, when he was driven to the camp ground. Later, it was said that he had enlisted the help of his fellow recruits to get rid of the media during knot training.

However, Ethan's hard work in camp paid off when he received excellent results in the educational area and was given the choice of an alternative service at the Ministry of Education in New Taipei City. Alternative service is a form of national service performed in lieu of conscription for various reasons, such as adequate health.

To avoid being embroiled in more controversies, Ethan arrived at the training ground as early as 8am yesterday. The actor was forced to appear for an interview during his break due to presence of the media, who were there to cover the story.

When asked if he had chosen the Ministry of Education because of its location and to bridge the distance gap with girlfriend Tiffany Hsu, Ethan seriously replied, "Don't be so nosy. Everyone wants to be closer to home."

Commenting on his current role, which will last a year, the actor expressed that he will try his best. He also spoke on the public's speculation, which claimed that he had an "easy job".

"If I wanted to slack off, I can do it anywhere. I can only try to do my best," Ethan said.

The actor is required to work eight hours a day, during his alternative service with the ministry, and will receive NT$9,955 (S$428) a month as remuneration.

Two days ago, Ethan took the opportunity after his training, to go on a date with Tiffany. He later uploaded a photo of them together on his microblog and captioned it: "Talk less, listen more. Complain less, give more compliments ... and heaven is just a step away."

The actor also responded to questions regarding the post yesterday, saying that there was nothing special about the update and that it was not the first time he had uploaded their photo online. He added that the caption was content from his training, which said to look on the bright side of things, when the going gets tough.

Ethan is scheduled to be discharged from the army in January next year.
